Couples therapy offers a space to explore the patterns and dynamics in your relationship. You might feel frustrated getting your point across, you might be repeating conflicts, you might feel disconnected, or you might simply be navigating major life transitions together. A crisis might threaten the relationship, and at the same time it may be an invitation to stop avoiding long simmering problems and reconnect on a deeper level.
In couples work, my role is to facilitate dialogue and deeper relating between you. Unconscious attachment patterns are part of what draws us to a partner and makes the connection exciting and satisfying, and at the same time they can be disruptive. Ideally, the presence of a trained therapist gives you space to re-regulate and connect in a way that has the healing power that a good relationship has.
Couples engage in therapy at all stages of their relationship and find it useful. It may help overcome initial hurdles, or help work through major life events or infidelity. Sometimes couples come to therapy when it is “too late” or the work is not suitable. We try to establish together fairly quickly whether our work is productive. Sometimes therapy can help a couple separate with a clear view of what the right choice is, and remain more amicable.
Couples therapy sessions are 60 minutes and typically start weekly, then we can adjust the frequency as needed. The work involves both partners, and I aim to create a safe space where both voices can be heard and understood.
