About me

I am a UK qualified and UKCP registered psychotherapist. Originally from Germany, I have lived in London for 15 years having previously lived in the United States and recently in Berlin. After completing a PhD in psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, I worked in academic and applied research, including at the Anna Freud Centre. In 2014, I discovered the Alexander Technique, which gave me an entirely different, embodied and non-verbal access to knowledge. Inspired by this experience I started training in integrative psychotherapy at the Metanoia Institute in London, where I qualified as an integrative psychotherapist. In addition to private practice, I have worked in a range of settings including for the NHS at the South London and Maudsley Talking Therapies.

Marianne Promberger

Why psychotherapy?

I work with a range of issues such as stress & burnout, depression, anxiety, shame, difficult relationships, bereavement, life transitions, sexuality, identity, LGBTQ+, the challenges facing expats and all those who straddle different cultures.

Everyone experiences difficult times in their life, and often we can move through them with resources such as our own insight, friends and family, or practices such as meditation and yoga. Sometimes however we have painful experiences that we feel we cannot share with those around us, leaving us with a sense of isolation. We may have moved to maladaptive coping mechanisms, such as hiding parts of ourselves out of fear of rejection or not daring to try new things. Or we get stuck because even in trying to change we fall back to familiar patterns; we have a blind spot for truly new possibilities.

Working with a therapist can help you break through the isolation, see things from a new perspective, and form new and genuine connections in your life. You gain better self-awareness and understanding, for example of difficult relationships or work situations. Sharing your experience with another human being in a confidential, supportive, and gently challenging setting can create space for true change and creativity.

Sessions and fees

  • £85-£110 for individual sessions. Sessions last 50 minutes and are usually weekly.
  • £130 for couples sessions. Sessions last 60 minutes and are usually weekly or fortnightly.

How many sessions does it take? I offer both short-term (eight to 24 sessions) and longer term therapy. We talk about this and decide jointly in our first session, and we can adapt this as needed. Depending on the issues you bring, even a short course of sessions can help you start a change process. Longer term therapy can give the chance to explore more long-standing issues and can give support in a difficult life phase. Sometimes clients continue after an initially time-limited set of sessions because they have discovered possibilities they would like to develop further.

Psychotherapy

My therapy approach

The core of my approach is humanistic — the currently fashionable term is “trans-diagnostic.” I am concerned with understanding you as a person — both what you have in common with others with similar struggles, but also what makes you unique.

My central way of working is relational psychodynamic. Our childhood, family dynamics, and disruptive life events can still influence how we see ourselves and how we relate to others. The relationship with an experienced therapist helps notice and transform these patterns in the “here and now.”

In our work together, I integrate further approaches to best suit your situation, such as EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), emotionally focused therapy (EFT), and somatosensory approaches.

My practice is embodied and trauma aware. Trauma comes in many guises: most of us have experienced feeling alone in psychological pain somewhere along the lifespan. Trauma has a mind-body impact. Where appropriate we can use EMDR to help you process traumatic memories and “stuck” experiences, within a holding therapy relationship.
